Former councilor Jairo dos Santos Júnior, Dr. Jairinho, was silent during the interrogation hearing on the death of the boy Henry Borel, held this Wednesday (9). In the same session, Monique Medeiros, the boy’s mother, testified for more than 10 hours and reported physical aggression from her ex-boyfriend and death threats that she would be suffering in jail.
The interrogations were carried out by Judge Elizabeth Machado Louro, of the 2nd Criminal Court of the Capital. The hearing began around 11 am with the interrogation of Jairinho, who chose to remain silent, a constitutional right.
He stated that he did not feel prepared to speak and said that he awaits access to documents, such as exams, images from the hospital and the Legal Medical Institute (IML) and medical records, so that he can manifest himself later. Jairinho’s defense requested that no images of the defendant be taken during his testimony.
Next, Monique looked back on her life, telling facts, chronologically, from her upbringing in Bangu, her professional activities to her relationship with Jairinho, going through her marriage to Leniel Borel, the boy’s father, and the crisis experienced by ex-couple after the birth of Henry.
During her interrogation, Monique reported aggressions committed against her by Jairinho, citing episodes of physical, verbal and psychological violence. According to her, Jairinho even hanged her on one occasion, due to an episode of jealousy. Likewise, when they both had a sexual relationship, there were also acts of hanging on his part.
Monique also reported that Jairinho would sometimes sneak pills into her drink to make her sleep. “There was an episode where I saw Jairinho macerating a pill in my wine glass. I asked him why. He said it was so I could sleep with him, when he was taking pills too.” According to Monique, on the night Henry died, in the early hours of March 8, 2021, she was sleeping and was woken up by Jairinho, saying that she had heard a noise in the room where the boy slept.
“He woke me up, said he heard a noise, that Henry fell to the floor. He was uncovered, motionless, his eyes staring into space and his mouth open. Henry’s hands and feet were cold. Jairinho said he had to take him to the hospital. In my head, my son was alive all along.”
threats
She told the judge that she is being threatened with death in jail by other inmates. Likewise, she said that a prison guard pressured her, saying that she should respect Jairinho’s father, state deputy Coronel Jairo, who has a strong influence in the west side of Rio. Also, according to Monique, a lawyer sought her out in jail and asked that she agreed to give a statement similar to that of Jairinho, under threat that “her head would be at a price.”
The session ended at 10 pm, with questions asked by Jairinho’s defense, but which were not answered by Monique, following the guidance of her defense. After the interrogations, the judge will decide if Monique and Jairinho will go to the popular jury.
