HS put together what emerged from the shooting incident connected to the MP of the Basic Finns on Saturday.
On Friday from coming into the public eye and becoming a member of parliament for basic Finns To Timo Vornasen new information emerged on Saturday about the related shooting incident.
In this article, HS compiled everything that came out of the case on Saturday.
The member of parliament suspected of shooting was in custody
Helsinki Police Department announced on Saturday afternoon that A 54-year-old man was detained on suspicion of a crime against life and health. The incident is related to the shooting that took place on the night between Thursday and Friday in Helsinki's Antinkattu.
The police have not confirmed the suspect's name, but media reports and, for example, several Perusfinnolis have talked about Vornase.
Party secretary of the Basic Finns Harri Vuorenpää said in the message service X on Saturday evening after 19:00 that Vornanen has been released. Vuorenpää told HS around 19:30, that he did not know the exact time of release or where Vornanen was at that moment.
As of Saturday evening, HS has not reached Vorna or his assistant to comment on the matter.
The background of the events is a dispute at the restaurant Bar Ihku
According to the police, the preliminary investigation revealed that the events started at the restaurant Bar Ihku. A 54-year-old man and a member of an external workplace party had had an argument, which was also accompanied by a “very little shoving”, which had, however, been settled in the restaurant.
Around 4 o'clock in the morning, the workplace party and the man had met outside the restaurant. The man had suddenly taken out the gun he had with him. The barrel of the weapon had pointed towards the people present during the weapon use situation. After this, the man had fired one shot into the ground.
No one was injured in the shooting, said the head of the investigation Jukka Larkio For HS on Saturday afternoon. The bullet did not hit close to people, and did not cause a shrapnel hazard, for example.
According to Larkio, alcohol played a role.
HS reached an eyewitness who was proven to have been in the nightclub, according to whom Vornanen was already in the nightclub early Thursday evening.
Chairman of Basic Finns Riikka Purra said Saturday afternoon to HS, that the party's information about the night between Thursday and Friday is still inaccurate. According to Purra, in addition to Vornase from Joensuu, the party's MP from Outokumpu had been in the party Sanna Antikainen. In addition, the party has at least at some point included guests of representatives from North Karelia.
Vornanen did not leave the weapon in the parliament for safekeeping
Earlier on Thursday, Timo Vornanen was in the parliament. Administrative Director of the Parliament Pertti Rauhio said to HS on Saturdaythat Vornanen probably left the parliament around 6 p.m.
According to Rauhio, Vornanen did not leave the weapon to the security department of the parliament for safekeeping on Thursday.
“I would assume that if he had left, I would have been notified. From this you can conclude that he did not leave,” Rauhio said.
According to Rauhio, MPs can keep the weapon they use for shooting or hunting in the parliament if they need it for their hobby after the work day.
It has been reported that the weapon used in the shooting incident was a licensed small-caliber weapon. Vornanen is known as a hunting enthusiast, and he is a police officer by civilian profession. He is on leave from his position as a senior constable at the Eastern Finland Police Department.
According to information from Helsingin Sanomat the shooting incident did not involve the police's service weapon. The service weapon must be kept at the workplace. For this reason, the weapon used in the case was probably a hobby weapon.
Members of Parliament do not go through a security check, i.e. a metal detector, when entering the building.
How has the case been commented on?
According to Riikka Purra, the chairman of Basic Finns, the information that became public on Friday and Saturday about MP Vornane's suspected involvement in the shooting incident in Helsinki is very serious and shocking.
“Nothing justifies the action. Considering Vornane's position, education and profession, it is even more serious”, Purra commented to HS on Saturday via message.
Party secretary of the Basic Finns Harri Vuorenpää according to the doubt seems really serious.
“Many things are still unclear, but at this point this looks like a really serious situation”, Vuorenpää told HS on Saturday.
Prime minister Petteri Orpon According to (kok), the suspected shooting incident linked to the MP is “stopping and exceptional”.
“Suspicion of a crime against a Member of Parliament is always a very serious matter”, Orpo commented to HS via text message through his special assistant.
The president of the Republic Alexander Stubb didn't want to “take a stand on this case individually” on Saturday at the main National Veterans Day celebration.
“I hope that the Finnish rule of law and legal system will work, and I believe that this will happen,” said Stubb MTV's showing a live broadcast of the main National Veterans Day celebration.
Also several opposition representatives expressed shock at the incident during the weekend.
“
“Suspicion of a crime against a member of parliament is always a very serious matter”, commented Orpo.
The flow of communication has raised questions
The case became public Seiska magazine news about it on Friday.
According to party secretary Vuorenpää, the matter was intended to be made public through the party's own communications, but the issues could not be resolved in time.
“When we didn't get enough accurate information, it wasn't appropriate to speculate on the matter,” Vuorenpää told HS on Saturday.
Purra wrote message service X on Saturday evening that he had been “closely available to the media” since Friday.
“We cannot share speculative information or make guesses. It wouldn't be in anyone's interest,” he wrote at around 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.
The police informed about it on Saturday afternoon.

In which case is it still open?
Many key aspects of the case are still open. For example, it is unknown where Vornanen was on Thursday, why he had a gun at the time of the incident and how long he may have had it with him.
According to the police, the interrogation reports about the events outside the restaurant have been contradictory. Also, for example, the reason for the dispute was still not completely clear on Saturday during the day.
The police said on Saturday that the crimes will be specified during the investigation.
“
The reason for the presence of the weapon or the dispute is not yet known.
What kind of sanctions can result from the case?
Emeritus Professor of Criminal and Procedural Law at the University of Eastern Finland Matti Tolvanen told HS on Saturday that a Member of Parliament cannot be arrested or imprisoned on frivolous grounds without Parliament's permission.
“It must be a pretty serious crime to be able to arrest or imprison without the consent of the parliament,” he said.
According to Article 30 of the Finnish Constitution, “a member of parliament may not be arrested or imprisoned without the consent of the parliament before the start of the trial, unless he is suspected of being guilty of a crime for compelling reasons, for which the lightest punishment provided for is at least six months' imprisonment”.
If a member of parliament is sentenced to conditional or unconditional imprisonment for an intentional crime, the parliament will then consider the status of the convicted member of parliament.
HS asked Purra on Saturday what kind of sanctions the MP could face for such an action.
“Sanctions are discussed at the official meetings of the party bodies. The most serious sanction at our disposal is removal from party membership and parliamentary group. These will be announced when there is something to be announced,” Purra tweeted on Saturday.
“As soon as the authorities get more clarity on the matter, the conclusions required by the situation will be drawn,” said party secretary Vuorenpää on Saturday.
