In an interview with Game File, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer hinted at the possibility of Sony and Nintendo games potentially coming to Xbox in the future, saying he doesn't think it will happen, although he wants it to.
This led him to talk about Helldivers 2, Sony's recently released co-op shooter, which released simultaneously for PS5 and PC and has been incredibly successful on both platforms. Spencer said he doesn't see any benefit in a game like this not also being available on Xbox.
Spencer's words
“When I look at a game like Helldivers 2 — and it's a great game, kudos to the team that released it on PC and PlayStation — I'm not exactly sure how it helps the industry by not being on Xbox,” Spencer said. “They have to make excuses to be able to say that, in some way, this has benefited someone somewhere.”
“But I understand it,” he added. “There's a legacy in console gaming that benefits us if we publish the games and don't put them elsewhere. We do the same thing.”
What Spencer means is that from the players' point of view there is no advantage in having an exclusive game (and it's true), but it admits that those who produce consoles create value for their platform with exclusivity. All console manufacturers have exclusives for this very reason.
At the same time, Sony president Hiroki Totoki says that PlayStation must push the multiplatform approach.
