Heavy rains, intensified by El Nino, have caused severe flooding in Tanzania. The coast is particularly affected; thousands of farms have been destroyed. Schoolchildren have also died.
In Tanzania, heavy rains and floods have killed at least 58 people since the beginning of the month. “From April 1 to April 14, 2024, there were 58 deaths due to heavy rains that led to flooding,” government spokesman Mobhare Matinyi told reporters on Sunday. Accordingly, the coastal region of the East African country is one of the most affected by the floods. Eleven people died there.
The rainy season in Tanzania reaches its peak in April. According to meteorologists, this year's rainfall will be exacerbated by the El Nino weather phenomenon.
On Friday, eight schoolchildren died when their bus plunged into a flooded ravine in the north of the country. A volunteer who wanted to help also died. More than 10,000 households were affected and more than 75,000 farms in the coastal and Morogoro region were damaged by the floods, Matinyi added.
According to scientists from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) research group, the rainfall recorded in East Africa between October and December is among the heaviest ever recorded in the region.
