“Thanks to research, a future without Alzheimer’s is possible, but to achieve this goal we must keep our feet firmly on the ground. The disease is certainly less scary. Furthermore, we know that we can prevent it. We already have evidence of an overall reduced incidence, because the control of risk factors can postpone the onset of this condition related to the aging of the population”. This is what Alessandro Padovani, president of the Italian Society of Neurology (Sin) and founding member of the Italian Association for Alzheimer’s Research, told Adnkronos Salute, on the sidelines of the press conference for the tenth anniversary of the foundation of Airalzh, which was held in Rome at the Ministry of Health.
Among the “many risk factors – explains Padovani – we find bad cholesterol, an uncontrolled vision defect, deafness especially if untreated. But then there are cardiovascular risk factors, hygiene, especially oral hygiene, the microbiota stimulated by incorrect diets, alcohol, cigarette smoking, air pollution from PM2.5, heavy metals”. In fact “the fragility of the brain or the vulnerability of the brain is expressed by increasing the risk of getting sick. So everything we can do to safeguard the health of the brain also serves to combat Alzheimer’s disease”, he concludes.
