During several hours of stay at the Zaporozhye NPP, the members of the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were able to make an initial assessment of the state of the facility. This was announced on Thursday, September 1, by the head of the organization, Rafael Grossi.
“Today we were able to collect a lot of information. The key things that I wanted to see, I saw,” he said.
At the same time, Grossi announced his intention to keep the agency’s permanent mission at nuclear power plants. According to him, the IAEA inspectors have a lot to do before they leave the station.
It is known that the IAEA specialists will remain at the facility even after the departure of the delegation. They will stay at the power plant until at least September 3, Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the military-civilian administration (CCA) of the Zaporozhye region, said.
At the same time, the head of the international organization received an appeal from the residents of Energodar related to the shelling of the city by the Ukrainian military. He promised to pay attention to this situation. As Grossi emphasized, the main goal of the mission is to prevent a possible nuclear accident, for which it is necessary “to agree with all parties.”
Representatives of the IAEA arrived at the ZNPP territory earlier on Thursday. On the day of the visit of specialists, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) once again opened fire near the station.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that four shells exploded at a distance of 400 meters from the first power unit of the ZNPP. In addition, Ukrainian saboteurs tried to seize the station, but the Russian Armed Forces prevented the landing of militants in the Vodiane area in a timely manner.
The Zaporozhye NPP was taken under the protection of Russian forces as part of a special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine and the Donbass. As Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, noted on August 11, the withdrawal of the Russian military from the facility could turn into a disaster, since Kyiv could use the station for monstrous provocations.
