The parish of Carmagnola broadcast mass via military frequencies
“But couldn’t they just turn off the radio?” This is the question that many are asking themselves in Carmagnola, a quiet town in the heart of Piedmont, after the news of the huge fine imposed on the parish. The sanction, amounting to approximately 100 thousand euroswas issued by inspectors from the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, which sparked a heated debate among citizens, on social media, and even within local institutions.
The reason for this fine, apparently, dates back to the fact that the radio frequencies used by the Collegiate Church to broadcast religious celebrations and moments of prayer overlapped with those used by the Italian military sector. This led the control body to believe that the use of the frequencies was irregular and to issue the fine.
The community’s reaction was a mix of disbelief, anger and disappointment. Many wonder if it wasn’t there a more accommodating way to deal with this situation. “Perhaps before imposing such a heavy fine, they could have been given an extension to comply or simply asked to stop service,” people wonder. “The sanction It appears to be a cleaver which risks bringing the activities of a provincial parish to its knees.”

The mayor of Carmagnola, Ivana Gaveglio, recalled the value of the parish radio during the Covid period, underlining how precious it was for the faithful who could not go to church. However, you also raised the important point of the checks, highlighting whether they had been announced or not. “I think they could be different solutions to resolve the situation,” the mayor said.
Pino Mandarano, head of the Samaritano listening center and close collaborator of the Collegiate, also underlined that, if a violation had been ascertained, it would have been more appropriate to give an initial warning, allowing the parish to regularize the situation in a good-natured way. Mandarano also pointed out that the radio was a service born years ago with the sole purpose of bringing the faithful closer to the parishwithout any profit-making intent.
