Affectionate, straightforward, humorous: national handball coach Alfred Gislason

Alfred Gislason is a stroke of luck for the German Handball Association, even without winning a tournament so far. The national coach is also playing for a new contract with his young team at the European Championships.
Er is even a model now. In a sturdy wool knit and a warm jacket, Alfred Gislason looks sternly into the camera from a wintry landscape in the DHB outfitter's spot. If he can carry it, you have to admit that this 64-year-old Icelander is a man for every floor. He seemingly effortlessly represents the handball association, speaks to high-ranking politicians, is happy about schoolchildren playing handball, and jokes with the former national soccer coach Hansi Flick.
He has a lot of responsibility in an association whose face he is more than any player – with the exception of goalkeeper Andreas Wolff. Gislason, even without winning a tournament so far, is a stroke of luck for the DHB because he clears up so many critical issues through natural authority: contradiction is pointless. In conversation he is neither gnarly nor cool or edgy, but rather approachable, straightforward and humorous. In the end it's just handball.
