Record title holder France won the bronze medal at the World Handball Championship and stopped Portugal’s success run shortly before the crowning glory. The six-time world champion directed by coach Guillaume Gille won the game for third place against the Germany cone Portugal with 35:34 (19:17) goals. The outsider from southern Europe was an equal opponent in front of around 11,000 spectators in the Norwegian capital Oslo and was even in the lead with two goals a quarter of an hour before the end.
Portugal was one of the surprise teams at this World Cup and was close to the first World Cup medal in its association history. Between 2006 and 2020, Portugal had not been able to qualify for a single international tournament. The team only returned to the big stage five years ago. In a dramatic quarter -finals, the Southwest Europeans prevailed against the German selection after extension 31:30.
