SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton beat Max Verstappen to win the São Paulo Grand Prix with Mercedes this Sunday, reducing his Formula 1 championship lead over his rival Red Bull to 14 points, with three to go races to the end.

Red Bull’s Verstappen finished second with Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas third, after an impressive and controversial weekend in Brazil that will go down in history as one of Hamilton’s greatest performances.

The Brit was fastest in Friday’s qualifying at Interlagos for the qualifying race that determines the starting grid on Sunday. But he was eventually thrown to last place on the grid in Saturday’s race after his car’s rear wing failed a technical inspection.

On Saturday he dropped out of 20th place and finished fifth, but he still had to start this Sunday in 10th after a five-place penalty for changing the engine. But he was looking forward to more.

In the end, the 36-year-old driver secured his third victory in Brazil, surpassing the performance of Italian Giancarlo Fisichella in 2003, who won the race after finishing eighth.

“Lewis, this is how you get over a 20-place disqualification,” Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said on the radio after Hamilton received the checkered flag amid the cheering crowd.

“Actually there were 25, but you’re right,” replied Hamilton, who also asked for a Brazilian flag on his car.

It was Hamilton’s sixth win of the season and the 101st of his career.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished fourth after entering the pits on the penultimate lap to put on new tyres, which guaranteed him the fastest lap and denied Hamilton an extra point.
