The British Lewis Hamilton once again vindicated the strength of Mercedes in the Las Vegas Grand Prix by setting the best time in the first and second free practice sessions. In the last round, there was only eleven thousandths of an advantage over his compatriot Lando Norris (McLaren). In both sessions, Hamilton showed that his car resurfaces in these conditions in which the track is more slippery and the temperatures are colder.
The seven-time world champion set a time of 1:33.825. The good start to the weekend for the German team was also confirmed by the good times of his teammate, George Russell, who was third, less than two tenths behind. The one who was far behind was Max Verstappen (17th), who did not even use the soft tires and his best time was more than two seconds away from that recorded by Hamilton. The Red Bull car seemed very nervous.
As for the Spanish, Carlos Sainz – who faces his last three races with Ferrari – was fourth in the second free practice session, almost three tenths behind Hamilton. Of course, in the race session, the man from Madrid was the most solid. The ‘top 5’ was completed by the other Maranello driver, Charles Leclerc, whose time was more discreet (almost half a second off the best).
Carlos Sainz was fourth and was less than three tenths behind Hamilton; Alonso, with rebound problems, was 14th
As for Fernando Alonso, the Asturian assured on Thursday that he was somewhat more optimistic regarding the performance that his Aston Martin could offer on this urban layout in the city of Nevada. Although the first free practice seemed to confirm it (7th), in the second the British were again very irregular. Alonso could only be fourteenth, more than a second and a half behind Hamilton. The 43-year-old from Oviedo complained during the session about the rebound of the AMR24, so they had to change the configuration of the car.
