The wait was long and the difficulties numerous, but after countless declarations and delays that upset Microsoft’s plans, we finally got to touch the full version of the promising Halo Infinte. Experience it affected us deeply, and net of some critical issues, however, left us very hopeful for the future of the series. We therefore leave you without delay to our review of the epic epic of Halo Infinite.
Halo Infinite is the beginning of a new story
As the title partly suggests, Halo Infinite is the beginning of a new narrative path set by the guys of 343 Industries that takes its foundations from Halo 5 And Halo Wars 2 but turning completely the page and preparing to tell a completely new story. However, we prefer not to go too deep into the events because we want to leave you the freedom to enjoy the adventure on your own, and consequently we will only mention the initial premises. About twelve months have passed since the end of the events of Halo 5. The AI companion and friend of Master Chief, Cortana, yes it already is rebelled for some time to its creators along with numerous other artificial intelligences, forcing humanity to face a terrible internal threat.
The USNC forces then wage a war against Cortana, but are surprised by an unexpected third enemy who catches the human fleets absolutely unprepared, causing very serious losses. The new variable is the faction of the Outcasts, an immense army already known in Halo Wars 2, consisting of mercenaries and warriors who were banished by the Covenant for their rebellion to the “Great Journey” and who now constitute an unparalleled and determined strike force for the systematic extermination of the human race. The adventure of Halo Infinite has many similarities with that of Halo: Combat Evolved, with the crews of the human ships missing on a halo ring (in this case Zeta Halo) on which to land, however, a fierce and lasting resistance on the ground with guerrilla tactics and asymmetrical assaults.
But the story of Infinite also becomes one with the passage of time clash of symbols opposed and with a great impact. On the one hand we have an unstoppable force, that of the Exiles of Atriox and Esharum, Brute warriors sent to die by the Covenant in suicide assaults but who have always managed to survive against all odds, now control the greatest army of mercenaries of the galaxy, which brings together all alien species in one great front and, armed to the teeth, pose a dangerous threat to human forces. On the other hand we have what, you will excuse the poetic license taken from the Dark Knight, is a immovable object, Master Chief, a soldier capable of subverting the outcome of any battle and ready to perform its duty at any cost.
He is the only salvation for humanity, a living legend but at the same time also a man “fragile” who has only seen the war in his life, lost friends and comrades, but who is still determined to save the human species. The narrative component at the base of the production is present as particularly intriguing and from enormous potential, and it is therefore a shame to see that it took us just 13 hours to complete it along with some secondary missions. However, we would like to clarify that at the end of our main adventure we had just completed the 45% of content available with numerous side missions and objectives to be completed, yet it makes us reflect the fact that the main campaign does not have a much longer duration despite the system that would like to be structured like an open world.
Play while humming epic tunes
As already mentioned above, the title offers an open map that you progressively expands and rather small in size, although fairly dense with things to do and characterized by myriads of secrets and upgrades. The story missions basically act as a bottleneck and lead the player to explore a new area after another. The system, therefore, tends to unify the secondary activities so as not to dilute them too much, mixing them well with the main missions. The latter follow a somewhat methodology classical seen in all chapters of the series, with very linear levels and great battles on screen, all flanked by some occasional passage aboard armored vehicles. What, however, simply bewitched us in the review was the intrinsic beauty of the gunplay featuring Halo Infinite, without forgetting a level design of the main assignments of the highest level. We tell you honestly, we haven’t had so much fun in a shooter since the release of Doom Eternal, with which Infinite shares some of the extremely aggressive gameplay, while obviously presenting its own very necessary and important differences.
The pace of the action is in any case very fast and adrenaline-pumping but at the same time capable of pulling the handbrake to invite the player to reflect and act firmly and decisively, especially during the more brutal boss fights. The gameplay of the title still manages to bring us in front of scenes that are simply one symphony for every shooter lover, with visceral firefights on multiple levels and shots that are as fast as they are brutal. Everything has been constructed in a superfine way, from the sound of weapons or the impacts of bullets on the flesh and armor of our opponents that sparkle when pierced, to the enemies that emit gasps when they fall to the ground dying, or that shout strategies and orders to their companions. team to incite them to fight. We will therefore find ourselves at cut down hordes seemingly inexhaustible of Exiles, lulled by an epic soundtrack that mixes perfectly as in a magnificent waltz of volleys of bullets, reloads of weapons and loads of explosions. In these scenarios we have found ourselves more than once a hum the tune playing in the background as we simply tore apart the hostiles, galvanized by the epicness of the battle.
The new grappling hook, then, it seemed to us one of the most successful elements of the entire recreational offer. So good and of such disarming simplicity that we would have liked to have it also in the previous chapters of the series, to relive the adventures of the good Chief with that panache that has characterized our gaming sessions. Halo Infinite. The formula patented by Bungie and then inherited and deepened by the guys at 343 Industries is therefore perfectly successful, although the newcomer has not failed to offer the hip on some aspects. In fact, perhaps due to the new nature designed for an open map, we found ourselves having to make some important notes on the work of the developers regarding the management of the assignments.
One of the best free-to-play games on the market, with some minor reservations
The multiplayer of Halo Infinite is confirmed in this review as one of the best components of the title. We had already covered the multiplayer mechanics of the product quite thoroughly in our previous preview in mid-November. However, during these two weeks there have been a few major changes to one of the major critical issues of the game, namely the economic component of battle pass. In fact, the possibility of obtaining experience to progress through the pass even simply by playing has been added, instead of completing questionable challenges.
Furthermore, the amount of experience conferred by the aforementioned and much hated challenges has also recently been increased, and the latter have also been simplified. A very good first pass therefore, but we would still welcome significant changes to the scoring system, in order to reward the player’s performance and not just stay in the game until the end. In fact, it has happened very rarely (thankfully) to find players AFK or partially absent who by moving the controls slightly remained in the game, but still obtained the same points compared to the first in the standings, obviously at the same time ruining the experience of others. The system is therefore imperfect in principle, but the developers have guaranteed to be working on it.
The contents are also starting to be a little redundant, since the maps, although very beautiful, there are not many and the modalities are scarce. Fortunately, the developers have said that they will be coming soon SWAT team And Fiesta, although we would have liked them at launch. Despite these criticalities, however, the multiplayer of Halo Infinite is reconfirmed of very high quality, with a lot of potential and a galvanizing and fun gameplay. We hope that many of the problems will be resolved as soon as possible because this multiplayer has the potential to stay on the international competitive scene for a long time. Finally, we must make some considerations on the technical sector of the product, than on Xbox Series X he showed himself as excellent, even if there are sometimes small limitations due to nature cross-gen of the product; however, the improvements over E3 2020 gameplay are still massive.
