A former gynaecologist from the former Carolus hospital in Den Bosch used his own sperm to conceive children between 1977 and 1985. The Jeroen Bosch hospital, the successor to the Carolus, reports this. Tuesday in a statement. The artificial inseminations with the gynecologist’s sperm were done without the knowledge and consent of the intended parents. It is the fourth case in the past five years in which doctors have used their sperm to inseminate intended mothers.
The Jeroen Bosch hospital says that the man in question is the biological father of at least one donor child. This undesirable practice would have come to light after a donor child reported last year with the suspicion of “being a child” of the former gynaecologist. DNA testing, to which the man in question voluntarily cooperated, has shown that he is indeed the biological father of the donor child.
Between 1977 and 1985, the former gynaecologist was the only doctor at the Carolus hospital involved in artificial insemination. He says he has used his sperm “a few times” during fertility treatments, according to the hospital. Further investigation should show, among other things, the extent of his actions. No other matches have yet been found from the database of Fiom, a specialist in parentage questions. Donor children who want to know whether Nagel is their biological father can report to Fiom. The man’s first name has not been released.
Although there were no laws and regulations regarding donor conception in the period in question, the hospital condemns Nagel’s actions. In 2017 it became clear that the now deceased doctor Jan Karbaat had fathered at least 53 children with his sperm. The Nagel case has since become the fourth to become known, after it was reported last week that a gynecologist at a hospital in Leiderdorp may have allowed 21 inseminations with his sperm.
