Guys | The sailing ship ran tightly aground off Helsinki

A 17-meter sailing ship sailed far in the shallows.

Estonian On Saturday afternoon, the traditional sailing ship ran aground on Helsinki’s Kruunuvuorenselka in the water area between Santahamina and Suomenlinna. The 17 meter long ship had three crew members and five passengers. No one was hurt.

“There was some kind of navigational error,” says the sea guard’s sea rescue director Marko Siro.

The ship was sailing at the time of the wreck. According to Siro, the ship drifted far into the shallows. Untangling the tightly stuck ship was quite a chore.

The ship was detached by tilting, which according to Siro is typical when sailing ships and boats are detached from shoals. The keel often makes it difficult to detach a sailing ship, which is why tilting is beneficial.

The ship was participating in Tervasaari’s Tynnyri sailing competition along with other traditional sailing ships.

A SAILING SHIP was lightened before detachment by transferring the passengers to another boat.

The rescuers gave a rope from another lifeboat to the sailboat, which the crew delivered to the mast. After that, the rescue boat tipped the sailboat while towing.

When the sailboat was heeled enough, another boat towed it away from the shallows. The whole operation took less than half an hour.

“First we tried different versions. There is no rush in itself when people are safe.”

Strippers carefully experimented with different techniques to get the ship out with the least possible damage.

In the end, tilting was judged to be the best method, and it worked well. The ship was not damaged, and it was able to continue its journey with its passengers.

There were a total of three sea guard boats and one police boat involved in the rescue operations. The first to help was the pilot boat, which reported a distress at sea. It was able to continue its tasks when the rescuers had arrived.

He was the first to report the accident People of Satakunta.
