Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the United Nations, said that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will travel to Istanbul later on Thursday.
This comes at a time when Turkish and international officials are seeking to sign an agreement with Russia and Ukraine to resume Ukrainian grain exports from the Black Sea ports.
Those parties had held a meeting in Turkey and reached an agreement to export grain piled in the ports of Ukraine.
On Monday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar confirmed that “a preliminary agreement has been reached” with Ukraine and Russia to establish a safe sea corridor that allows the transport of grain.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced that a “final document” would soon be ready to allow the export of grain from Ukraine.
The United Nations, the African Union and many other organizations are calling for facilitating the export of grain from Ukraine to avoid a global food crisis that has begun to affect many poor countries.
On Monday, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stressed that the resumption of grain exports from Ukraine was a “matter of life and death” for tens of thousands of people.
