New York (Union)
Yesterday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of an “independent review group” led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, to evaluate the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
According to a statement issued by Guterres, the group will evaluate whether UNRWA is doing everything it can to ensure its neutrality and respond to allegations of serious violations when they occur. The group will begin its work on February 14, and is expected to submit an initial report to the Secretary-General in late March, and to complete its final report, which will be published in late April.
The group’s terms of reference include identifying the mechanisms and measures that UNRWA currently uses to ensure its neutrality and responding to allegations or information indicating a possible violation of this principle.
