Recently the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences has closed the registration processes for the award Ariel 2023, that is because the government mentions that the budget is not good at the moment. Faced with this, figures from this business have spoken out, especially criticizing the mandates of the current president of the country.
It has been stressed that the state renounced its responsibility as the main promoter and disseminator of general culture (which includes dancing, theater, painting among more similar issues) and mainly in the cinematographic aspects. Even the famous director Guillermo le Toro mentions that what took decades to build has already been finished.
The systematic destruction of Mexican Cinema and its institutions – which took decades to build – has been brutal. We survived Lopez Portllo’s six-year term but this is unprecedented.

These comments were joined by Joaquin Cosio, actor that he mentions are not understanding the meaning of keeping the flame alive in terms of the budget for the cinema. These state supports are important for certain films to be a reality, and the budget reduction could further reduce Mexico in the map.

It is worth mentioning that the issue of the awards is classified as postponed, so it could return at some point. Although if the budget is withdrawn altogether, it is certain that at least this 2023 there will be no celebration.

Editor’s note: Cinema is something that the government has almost never taken into consideration, and it may have been withdrawn because they are going to use those taxes for something else. For now, it will be necessary to see if in the end the Ariel 2023 return as every celebrated year.
