The lake responsible for flooding in Porto Alegre reduced its level on Wednesday (May 23), but returned to the mark of 3.96 meters
Lake Guaíba, in Rio Grande do Sul, rose again this Thursday (May 23, 2024) after starting a falling process the day before, on Wednesday (May 22). At 4:45 am, he reached the 3.96 meter mark, according to balance from ANA (National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency).
The value represents a small drop compared to Wednesday’s peak, when the lake was at 3.98 meters (record at 00:30). Despite this, the reservoir had already started to fall throughout the day and registered 3.83 meters at 11:30 pm on Wednesday. Therefore, the new value of this 5th represents a increase of 13 centimeters in just over 5 hours.
Guaíba is almost 1 meter above the flood level considered by ANA. According to the agency, when the lake exceeds the level of 3 meters, there is a flood scenario. The highest record to date was made on May 5, when the waters reached 5.35 meters.
The lake has an extension of 496 km², responsible for covering the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The Jacuí, Sinos, Caí and Gravataí rivers flow into it.
With the rains, it was one of the main responsible for the flooding that took over the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Between homeless people, homeless people and people without water or energy in their homes, the city is already accounts 157,701 people affected.
