Two years ago, as if on cue, Mark Lanegan, the turbulent artist of the American alternative scene, a wandering spirit in the footsteps of Nick Cave, came to terms with his past by publishing a memoir, Sing Backwards and Weep. and an album Straight Songs of Sorrow, that sounded like an existential review, The spirit of a musician who died this Tuesday morning at his home in Killarney (Ireland), at the age of 57, has been embodied in them. The announcement of his death has been made public through his Twitter account. Lanegan was not only a great solo musician, but he was the former leader of the band Screaming Trees and at some point in his career he was part of the bands Mad Season, The Gutter Twins, Soulsavers, The Twilight Singers and Queens of the Stone Age. . She even collaborated with the Manic Street Preachers on the album The Ultra Vivid Lament.
Although the cause of his death has not been made public, in recent months various music publications reported that Lanegan had gone deaf after contracting covid-19, and had not fully recovered: he was later re-admitted to a hospital , spending months in bed, in and out of a coma.
Lanegan found fame in the band Screaming Trees, where he gave wings to the grungy of the eighties, which he led with his deep and dramatic voice. As Fernando Navarro recalled in the review of his latest album, “since he released solo, Lanegan, which he left in the nineties outstanding sharp works such as Whiskey for the Holy Ghost and I’ll Take Care of You, followed in the footsteps of Tom Waits and, especially, Nick Cave, guys capable of twisting a blues so much that they drowned it in rock remorse. From then on, he has done nothing more than wallow in his own darkness of drug addiction and depression until he has become a musician with a difficult mold, a bird of the night without a cage who has conscientiously experimented with electronics in the last decade”.

Born in Ellensburg, Washington, Lanegan disliked explaining his compositions. “I don’t like to talk about my music. In fact, I think I don’t like to talk about music. I would even tell you that I am not a big fan of talking, in general. I fell in love with rock in my teens because it only asked me to listen”, he said in an interview in EL PAÍS. After years of collaborating with musicians like Greg Dulli, Isobel Campbell, James Lavelle or various bands, his solo career made him grow as an artist. In 2012 he told: “For the first time in a long time, I found myself with nothing to do and, instead of waiting for someone to call me, I acted. I’m 48 years old and, well, a lot of my friends are already dead. Fewer and fewer people can call you to do something. I’m still alive. It’s a hit, if you take a look at my biography.”
