Confusion and fear at the start
The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix opened in chaos, with a series of large-scale accidents that caused the red flag and the immediate suspension of the race after just one lap. They were at least three major accidents which fortunately however only had consequences on the single-seaters and not on the drivers, who all escaped unharmed.
Haas bumper cars
The most impressive occurred at the bottom of the group, with him clash between the two Haas of Magnussen and Hulkenberg and the Red Bull of Perezwhich ended up disintegrated against the barriers after the crash caused by the Danish driver, who however was ‘acquitted’ by the stewards in what was considered a racing accident.
Shortly after they are instead the two Alpines came into contact with each otherwith Ocon who, immediately before the entrance to the tunnel, risked an extremely aggressive overtaking towards Gasly, which resulted in an accident which put car #31 offside, which jumped onto the right front wheel of the twin single-seater.
Sainz ‘saved’ after contact with Piastri
However, a contact had previously occurred even in the very first positions Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri: the Ferrari driver tried to pass the McLaren standard-bearer to take second place behind Leclerc, but he the front left tire touched the bottom of Piastri’s car, causing a puncture. Luckily for him, however, the chain of accidents behind the lines forced the Race Direction to display the red flag, effectively canceling what happened and allowing him to set off again not only with the repaired car but also from its original third square.
