From rags to riches
From joy to nightmare in the space of two weeks. There Ferrari had greeted its fans with images of Charles Leclerc’s unforgettable triumph in Monaco and with Carlos Sainz rejoicing for the third step of the podium. The awakening in Canada was very hard. Both red single-seaters were eliminated in Q2 in Montreal and they will start in Sunday’s GP from the sixth row, with Leclerc in 11th place and the Spaniard alongside him in 12th. The red team principal, Fred Vasseurspoke to the microphones of Sky Sports F1 at the end of the day, admitting the misstep but still showing confidence in view of the event that awards the points.
“Qualifying didn’t work at all: that’s for sure. It’s not the result we expected. We suffered a lot with the tires and we are certainly not the only ones – explained the French manager – but that’s no consolation. Russell took pole on used tyres, it was very difficult to understand the tires and in the end we couldn’t put everything together. But now let’s focus on tomorrow: the race pace yesterday was good with both dry and wet tires and the race is tomorrow“.
Confidence for the race, but watch out for the weather
For the race there is also the risk of see the rain again, which has been accompanying the Circus’ Canadian trip since Friday. From this point of view, however, Ferrari does not seem worried: “In the wet yesterday we had good pace for the whole lap – suggested Vasseur – a lot of it is related to tire pressure, but on the race simulation yesterday we were doing well with both the dry and wet tyres, so I think tomorrow will be a different story. Today we struggled a lot to ‘turn on’ the tires for the flying lap: we need to do a better job on this aspect for the next races“.
“There is always a combination to be found between the compound, the track temperature and the car set-up – concluded Vasseur – but today we were not in the right place at the right time due to the set-up and the pressure and we need to understand this better for the next qualifying. For the race we will first need to see the weather because the forecasts are not good and therefore there could be a chaotic situation. We will have some cards to play, but we’ll see tomorrow. The weather will dictate how the race will go.”.
