Mauro Mendes cites project to record fines for environmental crimes not paid on registration: “it means the loss of the land”
The governor of Mato Grosso, Mauro Mendes (União Brasil) said this Monday (April 29, 2024) that environmental laws are not effective because there is a “culture of impunity”.
In an interview with the program “Roda Viva“, from the TV CulturaMendes said that 98% of producers in Mato Grosso “act legally” and who is in favor of tightening legislation against deforestation. Including confiscating land from ruralists who degrade native vegetation.
“We are sending a law to the Legislative Assembly of the State of Mato Grosso that will allow the State to record this fine on the license plate if it does not pay. This means the loss of the land. In fact, by the way, I have been arguing that Brazilian law has to change and anyone who carries out illegal deforestation loses their land.”.
Asked about the more than 700 fire outbreaks mapped in the State in 2024, Mendes said that the causes are natural or accidental and that only 2% would be criminal.
