The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, said this Tuesday, 9th, that the government will create a structure to locally coordinate actions related to the Yanomami indigenous land, in Roraima. Around R$1.2 billion will be dedicated to federal actions in the region in 2024, according to the minister. According to Rui Costa, after Carnival, the government will announce the actions in more detail.
The minister gave the statements after a meeting with other ministers and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held at Palácio do Planalto to evaluate the government's actions in the area and plan future ones. “The bulk of the work to combat organized crime was carried out successfully. This does not mean that there are no more miners and criminals in the region,” Costa told reporters.
The Minister of the Civil House said that there will be a migration from “emergency to structuring actions”. Last year, images were released of malnourished indigenous people and their way of life was threatened by miners. The government developed emergency assistance and crime fighting measures at the time.
The plan mentioned by Costa is to create a “government house” in Roraima. In other words, a local and permanent coordination of federal government actions for the region. There would be, for example, three bases within indigenous land.
This new body should include ministries with actions related to the Yanomami, such as Justice, Health, Indigenous Peoples, Social Assistance and Defense. The Armed Forces will no longer take care of the logistical part of assistance actions in March, but will also be part of the structure – as will the Federal Police.
Government measures last year removed thousands of miners from indigenous land, but there would still be activities by these groups. 400 operations would have been carried out, and R$600 million in seizures.
According to Rui Costa, there will also be actions to recover the Yanomami way of life – such as restructuring their fishing and farming operations. This would, for example, reduce the need for food delivery. There would still be a new structure for the Indigenous Health House in Roraima.
The following ministers were with Rui Costa at the press conference: Paulo Pimenta (Secom), Sonia Guajajara (Indigenous Peoples), Wellington Dias (Social Assistance), Márcio Macêdo (General Secretariat), Nísia Trindade (Health), Marina Silva (Environment) and Sílvio Almeida (Human Rights). Also the presidents of Ibama, Rodrigo Agostinho, and Funai, Joenia Wapichana.
