During the night of Oscarthe composer Ludwig Göransson received the award for best soundtrack with the film Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan. The recognition is very deserved and I don't want to discuss it in the slightest, except that Göransson wanted to season the withdrawal of the statuette with some rather out of tune words, to remain in the musical field: “To my parents, thank you for giving me guitars and drum machines instead of video games .”
Open wound
Now, don't misunderstand, because I don't even want to discuss what Göransson thinks of our medium. Of course, he could have contrasted anything else with musical instruments, but that's not the point. As an individual he has the right to think what he wants about video games, even if they are one waste of time total and that he was lucky to have parents who prevented him from playing. Probably the impulse to do so was there (otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned them with such a negative connotation), but they were rigid and rigorous and showed him an alternative path, which led him to win an Oscar of his own it must have had a positive effect.
But now I wonder why video games are still seen this way, even in an environment like this Hollywood which has repeatedly crossed paths with the gaming industry. Perhaps Göransson is the only one who thinks this way, which wouldn't be a tragedy, but we imagine that certain stances arise from the fact that the general consideration of the medium is still low, at least when observed as a whole. Certainly not on an economic level, given the investments in the sector, but just as a general perception. Unfortunately, putting forward certain works, to demonstrate the value of the medium, seems more and more like the classic prickly pear leaf, where the market is now made up above all of light games, focused on sociality and inflicted with monetization systems that can be defined as rapacious is often an understatement.
Well, the problem is that today, considering the entire market, therefore also and above all the mobile sector (which includes the majority of gamers), giving an answer to Göransson becomes really complicated. We imagine that when faced with a Return of the Obra Dinn, to name a name at random, he too would show a certain interest. But the industry is made up above all of something else, thanks also to the gamers themselves. Of course, not that cinema is very different in reality. For an Oppenheimer there are dozens of MCU films, but this doesn't disqualify cinema as such. After all, it is also true that there are dozens of excellent composers who are also gamers. So one thing does not necessarily exclude the other.
