Google has announced the successor to the Chromecast: Google TV Streamer. This isn’t just a simple upgrade, but a more powerful and versatile device, capable of handling 4K streaming and acting as a control center for the smart home. But at a significantly higher price.
Google TV Streamer looks like a slightly tilted tablet with rounded edges and a fixed base. It comes with a remote control with AAA batteries included, a USB-C port for power and data transfer, an HDMI 2.1 port, and an Ethernet port for wired internet up to 1 Gbps. It also supports Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac.
With 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, Google TV Streamer can handle content in 4K at 60fps with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos audio formats. The Android TV OS operating system provides access to numerous streaming apps such as YouTube TV, Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV. In addition, Google promises that the Streamer will use AI and user preferences to suggest personalized content.
Google TV Streamer also supports Geminithe new assistant based on the eponymous language model. Gemini is able to offer complete summaries, reviews and season-by-season breakdowns of content, but it is not yet clear if and when these functions will be available in Italy.
In addition to streaming, Google TV Streamer also serves as a smart home hub, with support for Matter and the ability to act as a Thread border router. A dedicated dashboard lets you control your smart home devices, and Google is also integrating the Google Home dashboard and the ability to control security cameras.
The Streamer lets you stream media from your phone, add it to speaker groups, and control music in your home right from your TV. It also has a lost remote control tracking feature that will beep on demand.
Google TV Streamer will be available in Italy starting from September 24, exclusively on Google Store and Amazon, at price of 119 eurosor about fifty euros more than the latest Chromecast model, production of which has already been discontinued.
