Google said it will create an “African cloud service”, as part of a billion-dollar investment plan, for the continent, which will allow users to store their data inside the country.
The cloud infrastructure will be based in South Africa, but will give users choices about where their data is stored, said Niral Patel, director of the “Google Cloud” platform in Africa, according to Bloomberg News Agency on Wednesday.
“We give customers and partners a choice, and then they have to choose where they want to store their data and where they want to consume their cloud services,” Patel said in a video call on Wednesday.
African countries have a variety of laws around data sovereignty, with some of these laws requiring companies to store data within their borders, which increases demand for a more flexible regional cloud service.
