Report estimates an increase in sector activities, driven by a strong recovery in Asian markets
International tourism is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2024, reported UNWTO (World Tourism Organization), linked to the UN (United Nations), in report released on Friday (19.Jan.2024). In 2023, the sector reached 88% of the level reached in the period before the health crisis.
The organization estimates an increase in the sector's activities, driven by the increase in global air connectivity and a strong recovery in Asian markets. 1.3 billion tourists are expected in 2024.
The UNWTO estimates that the Chinese tourism market should grow after the country's government allows visa-free travel for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia until November 30 this year.
The report warns, however, of the war in the Middle East, led by Israel and the extremist group Hamas. According to the UNWTO, the conflict represents a risk to global tourism, as it could affect the confidence of potential travelers.
In 2023, tourism in Mediterranean Europe, the Caribbean and the subregions of Central America and North Africa surpassed 2019. The sector contributed US$3.3 billion to the global economy in the period.
