Russian invasion turns 2 years old this Saturday (Feb 24); Western officials visited Kiev and pledged support for Zelensky
On the 2-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Western leaders reinforced support for the country against the Russian invasion. This Saturday (Feb 24, 2024), the prime ministers of Italy, Canada and Belgium arrived in Kiev, as well as the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Italian Giorgia Meloni signed security agreements with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trudeau has committed to providing 3 billion Canadian dollars in military support to Ukraine through 2024.
“Today, side by side with our allies and partners, Canada committed to continuing to provide assistance, including military and humanitarian support, to Ukraine. We will stand by Ukraine, whatever the cost, for as long as necessary”, declared Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The agreement with Italy establishes a 10-year defense pact with the country. Both agreements are part of the G7 Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine.
“Europe, the West, are here to celebrate an act of love because here Ukrainians defended what they loved and, in doing so, they also defended us. They fought to give us the chance to be here today, to say that this land is a piece of our home and that we will do our part to defend it.”said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
“Ukraine’s future lies in the European Union. The European Union will continue to provide Ukraine with regular and predictable financial support,” declared Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission.
On their social media profiles, other global leaders also reinforced their support for the European country on the anniversary of the war with Russia, such as Emmanuel Macron (president of France), Joe Biden (president of the USA) and Olaf Scholz (chancellor of Germany). Read below:
