Since a time ago PlayStation announced plans to focus on creating multiplayer titles and various games as a service. In fact, at the time they said they already had 13 of them in development. However, fans thought that was a very bad idea and that the company was late to the party. After the huge failure of many games as a service and a lot of competition in the market, would this really be the best way forward?
Time proved his fans right. Well, Sony has already cancelled several of these supposed games and is also having trouble releasing those that were somehow saved from being discontinued. Here we also believe that PlayStation should stop pursuing this dream of creating successful multiplayer games, because we’ve already seen that they can’t do it.
Why PlayStation should give up on its dream of multiplayer
PlayStation wants to be very late to the games-as-a-service party
A few years ago, video games as a service were positioned as a golden model that many companies wanted to follow. After all, with just one game you could have a constant cash flow. However, it was precisely this desire that made companies start filling the space with various gaming-as-a-service options, making the market increasingly competitive and saturated.
Nothing good lasts forever and one of the most resounding failures of games as a service was Marvel’s AvengersInstead of giving us a memorable campaign that took advantage of the heroes, they decided to make a game-as-a-service that just failed to take off.
Four years later we have the situation with Suicide Squad which was even worse. Even a few months after its release it is already extremely discounted and will probably not receive support for more than a year. The most shocking thing here is that PlayStation sees this mess of games as a service and still dares to give us one in the form of Concord. But that’s not the worst part.
They continue to be fools with a game that apparently nobody wants.
Concord is the debut game from Firewalk Studios. This team formed an alliance with PlayStation in 2021 precisely with the intention of getting them to help them with their ambitions of having highly engaging games as a service. By 2023 they acquired them, perhaps with too much hope in what they did.
Unfortunately, it seems that players did not think the same. The first trailer was poorly received. Then came the open beta to prove that almost no one is interested in it. Despite being an open beta, the game reached an extremely small number of players. According to SteamDB data, its peak number of players only reached 2,388 simultaneously.
The worst part is that, even with the facts, the game is still on the way and it is not free-to-play. Concord will go on sale at a “modest” cost of $40. We’ve already said that games as a service have a greater chance when they are free to play. Releasing a paid game significantly reduces the chances of players giving it a chance. Why spend money on something that will die in a couple of months?
Crash Team Rumble It was a paid game-as-a-service that is now dead. Suicide Squad tIt is also paid and although it receives updates it is noticeable that it is already with San Pedro. These games had the difference of belonging to very famous IPs and even interesting to the public and still failed. What’s in store for a completely new franchise attempt that players have already shown they don’t want?
Right now the only hope for PlayStation, if they don’t want to make it free to play, would be to release Concord for free for PS Plus subscribers to build a good foundation. Otherwise, they’re just going to take it out to die.
It seemed that PlayStation had already learned its lesson with its cancellations.
At the end of last year it seemed that PlayStation had learned its lesson. After all, years after giving us no news about The Last of Us multiplayer, they decided to cancel it. Although it seems that it was more Naughty Dog’s decision.
Earlier this year they had massive layoffs which led to the cancellation of another pair of games-as-a-service. One about magic from London Studio and another seemingly based on the beloved franchise Twisted Metal. At the time this seemed like a complete reversal of Jim Ryan’s plans and his focus on games as a service. But we still have Concord, which is already controversial even days after its release.
We’re not happy when games fail, because they’re the work and effort of many people. But we have to admit that Concord could and should be the final nail in the coffin for PlayStation’s games-as-a-service.
They should focus on their strengths instead of chasing meaningless dreams.
For better or worse, PlayStation has made a name for itself by giving us what some disparagingly call movie games. Titles more focused on movie-like spectacles that sometimes come with very good playability. Perhaps it’s best that they continue with these experiments. After all, their best-known studios made their name with games of this style. Uncharted 4, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War. All of them were great titles without the need for games-as-a-service components.
Furthermore, this focus on games as a service is wasting their best assets. Naughty Dog already said it. Having them constantly update Factions II would have prevented them from continuing to deliver compelling single-player experiences. We actually saw it. Why do you think all these years they just gave us remaster after remaster while their biggest effort was in their multiplayer?
Furthermore, we cannot forget that throughout its history, PlayStation has never been known for its multiplayer. The first Factions and Uncharted 2-4’s multiplayer had their moments but never really took off and were just an add-on to excellent single player experiences.
If PlayStation doesn’t change its behavior, they could lose their status
PlayStation should focus on its strengths instead of releasing pointless projects with the intention of jumping on a trend that is frankly dying. All while burning through beloved IPs in genres people don’t want.
Especially now that fans are already wondering where the games are to get the most out of their PlayStation 5. JRight now there are very few and if what is coming is going to be like Concord, then we will go with our hands on our hips for PC or the competition.
Unfortun
ately, it’s already been four years of the current generation that PlayStation has completely wasted. Outside of Wolverine and the Insomniac games, we don’t know what else they have planned in the future from their studios.
Their current generation is highly dependent on third-party support and timed exclusivity. But if they don’t return to the variety, innovation and must-see titles they had a few years ago, then their status as one of the leaders in the industry will soon be lost.
