The great actor Glauco Mauri, 94 years old, passes away during the night: the theater world is mourning his loss
He passed away during the night Glaucus Maurione of the giants of Italian theatre. Born in Pesaro in 1930, he would have turned 94 on October 1st. His passing leaves a deep void in the world of dramatic art. A world that Mauri has marked with his immense talent and his absolute dedication for over seventy years.
In recent days, Mauri had suffered an illness that had forced him to give up his participation in the show De Profundisscheduled at the Vascello theater in Rome.
Glauco Mauri was a reference figure in the Italian theater scene, contributing indelibly to its evolution over the last fifty years. His love affair with the theater began in 1949. He trained at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts under the guidance of masters of the caliber of Orazio Costa and Sergio Tofano. These first steps represented the prelude to a career full of successes, both on stage and in the world of television and radio.
In 1961, together with Valeria Moriconi, Franco Enriquez, Emanuele Luzzati and later Mario Scaccia, he founded the famous Company of Four. The collective has brought to the stage works that have left their mark on the culture of our country. Mauri stood out not only for his interpretations, but also for his ability to bring the authors’ words to life, giving them new light and depth.
His talent was not limited to the theater. Starting in 1954, Mauri was a familiar face in Rai television productions, moving with great naturalness from comedy to classical tragedy. He played over sixty roles, demonstrating an extraordinary versatility that allowed him to conquer the small screen audience as well. Radio was also a medium that Mauri knew how to use masterfully, with frequent appearances in Rai’s prose programs, both on Radio Roma and in Milan.
Another fundamental chapter in his career opened in 1981, when he founded the Mauri-Sturno Company together with Roberto Sturno, with whom he shared an extraordinary artistic affinity. Together they brought to the stage a vast repertoire, giving life to characters from classical authors such as Sophocles, Shakespeare, Molière, Pirandello, up to contemporaries such as Beckett. Each role was a new challenge for him, a new opportunity to explore the depths of the human soul and return them to the public with a unique sensitivity.
On the big screen, Mauri had fewer opportunities to express himself, but each appearance was memorable. We remember him in the movies China is nearby by Marco Bellocchio, Deep red by Dario Argento and in the touching role of Nanni Moretti’s father in Ecce Bombo.
Mauri is a master of the theatre, capable of raising the art of acting to a higher level, through passion, rigor and unparalleled talent.
