Although historical contingencies and practical needs led him towards what is then industrial design, Giorgetto Giugiaro he has always had a great passion for figurative painting. Not just him to tell the truth: he himself is talking about “passion matured and passed down in the family“, since his grandfather and father were decorators, they frescoed churches and noble palaces. Don’t you believe it? So mark this date on your calendar: June 22, 2024.
Figurative painting according to Giugiaro
Yes, because in exactly five days, to be precise at 5.30 pm, the last large canvas measuring 9×5 meters created by Giorgetto Giugiaro will be exhibited and presented publicly for the first time at the Church of San Giovanni in the Borgo Maggiore of Garessio, a small village in the province of Cuneo. The protagonist of this canvas is Baptism of Jesuscarried out by John the Baptist on the banks of the Jordan River.
A great passion
“My painting wants to illustrate the moments of these sacred representations that are still alive, with the aim of portraying the true protagonists: both current ones and those of the past, thanks to archive photos – says Giorgetto Giugiaro himself – I wanted to enrich the church and this ritual with four paintings, the last of which, presented on this occasion, is dedicated not to the Mortorio but to the church itself: the moment in which John the Baptist baptises Jesus. No personal ambition, but a simple and passionate interpretation of that moment“.
The cars couldn’t be missing
But when we talk about Giugiaro we can’t help but talk about a vintage car (and not only). And in fact, at the same time as the presentation of the canvas in the square in front of the church they will be exhibited three historic cars of as many eras that mark the personal, professional and entrepreneurial history not only of Giorgetto but also of Fabrizio Giugiaro: let’s talk about the Alfa Romeo 2600 from 1960from the Giugiaro Structura from 1998 and of 2019 GFG Kangaroo.
