The government crisis that started a few days ago has again led to resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi, effectively opening a period of great uncertainty in a delicate moment for Italy and for the international scene: the war in Ukraine and geopolitical tensions, the energy crisis but also the return of the Coronavirus weighed on the national scenario and without a stable executive some situations related to the automotive world are also at risk. Starting from the extension of the cut of excise duties.
An extraordinary provision was recently issued which extended it further, setting the deadline for the reductions on petrol, diesel, LPG and methane for vehicles on 21 August. The crisis situation of the Government did not allow to further extend the period of the cut of 30 cents per liter on fuel and now, with the resignation of Draghi, it is difficult for the Executive to issue another provision to extend everything also for the period after the summer. With the energy crisis and almost double-digit inflation, however, it is difficult to think that the situation regarding prices at filling stations will improve on its own. An age-old problem will also be that of the management of PNRR projects: the launch of what has been established is a fundamental condition for the disbursement of European contributions and without a stable interlocutor, the EU could decide to freeze or divert funds elsewhere if the deadlines were not re-entered. Without a Budget Law then everything could become even more complicated. With the elections between September and October, it would take more weeks to give life to the new Executive, assuming that it is able to form and at what point the time may already be too mature.
Always connected to the PNRR there is also a discourse on investments by private individuals, such as what Stellantis should complete in Termoli for the construction of the Gigafactory of batteries. Once again there would be no interlocutor for the group led by Carlos Tavares and in a climate of uncertainty it is difficult for the company to decide to invest lightly. Draghi’s resignation and the government crisis could therefore also have serious consequences on the automotive sector, which has already been severely tried for two years now.
