The German parliament will approve on Friday the applications of Sweden and Finland to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization “NATO”, as it seems certain that the “Bundestag” will approve the accession of the two northern German allies.
The bill was proposed by the three parties in the ruling coalition in addition to the conservative opposition, ensuring that the bill was approved by a large majority.
The two Scandinavian countries, after decades of neutrality, moved to join the Western alliance in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
On Tuesday, the ambassadors of the 30 member states of NATO signed the accession protocols in the presence of the foreign ministers of Sweden and Finland in Brussels.
Ratification requires unanimous approval. Canada and Estonia have already completed this process.
