Germany | Hundreds of thousands demonstrated against the extreme right and the AfD party

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attended the demonstration last weekend.

in Germany around 250,000 people gathered in protests against the extreme right and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party across the country on Saturday, according to German broadcaster ARD.

According to the police, demonstrations have been organized in several different cities, such as Frankfurt, Hanover and Dortmund.

The protests began after the German investigative journalism website Correctiv reported earlier in January that members of the AfD had discussed, among other things, the deportation of immigrants at a meeting of the extremists. The anti-immigration AfD has confirmed that its members attended the meeting.

The leader of the Austrian identitarian movement also participated in the meeting Martin Sellner. The movement supports the population exchange theory, which is a far-right conspiracy theory.

Also the Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz attended a demonstration last weekend. Scholtz said any plan to deport immigrants or citizens would be an attack on the country's democracy.

of the AfD popularity has grown recently, and the party has topped opinion polls in the eastern states of Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. In all of them, the National Day elections will be held next autumn.

According to Correctiv, in addition to AfD members, two members of the country's Christian Democratic Union CDU and its Bavarian sister party CSU's right-wing conservative group Werteunion (Union of Values) attended the meeting. Werteunion leader Hans-Georg Maassen said on Saturday that the group would leave the party and form a new party.

According to the party, it has four thousand members, the majority of whom have previously belonged to CDU or CSU.
