Stockton – A German cruise ship from the 1950s is sinking at a berth in the USA. The US Coast Guard announced this on Wednesday (May 22). The MV Aurora, which is no longer seaworthy, is currently lying in the Little Potato Slough near the Californian city of Stockton. According to the Coast Guard’s statement, the Californian disaster control agency was informed on Wednesday that the almost 90-meter-long ship was sinking due to water ingress and that substances were leaking into the approximately four-meter-deep water.

According to the coast guard, the nature of the substances and where they came from on the ship are still being investigated. However, a shimmering film was seen around the ship and an oil boom was laid to prevent the substances from spreading further. Since the MV Aurora recently changed hands, it has not yet been possible to determine what kind of pollutants are on board the ship.
However, the police in San Joaquin County have already provided information about the substances, which they say are diesel and oil. Therefore, an environmental protection organization was called in, such as the News agency AP reportedHowever, no animals have been seen yet that have come into contact with the oil.
In the coming days, there will be dives to examine the condition of the ship, The Coast Guard saidIn addition, the substances should be removed from the water.
Former German cruise ship changed owners several times
The MV Aurora was built in Germany in 1955. It was initially called “Wappen von Hamburg“ and was used as a seaside resort ship in the North Sea. Even though English media talk about a cruise ship, the MV Aurora cannot be compared to the caliber of today’s Cruise ships that even take passengers on world tours The ship has been sold several times over the decades and has traveled all over the world. According to reports, the MV Aurora has not been actively sailing since the 1980s, but has only changed its berth while being towed.
Restoration work on the ship has been underway for several years. It is unclear what will happen next with the ship, which comes from Germany. (ial)
