Mexico’s Daniela Gaxiola sealed a historic result for Mexico and Latin America in the women’s keirin event in track cycling.
The tricolor cyclist competed head to head against the best in the world in the Final, thrilled the tricolor fans by placing herself in first place for a few moments and made them dream of another medal in Paris 2024.
However, in the final stretch she was overtaken by the more experienced ones and was relegated to sixth position.
Gaxiola took home a valuable Olympic diploma and became the first Latin American to compete in the Final since the event debuted in the women’s category (London 2012).
Thus, the Culiacán native surpassed her result from Tokyo 2020, where she finished in 11th position.
Gold went to world champion Ellesse Andrews of New Zealand, silver to Hetty van de Wouw of the Netherlands and bronze to Emma Finucane of Great Britain.
