According to popular belief, eating foods such as coffee, sour apples and citrus fruits on an empty stomach does not harm the gastric mucosa. This was reported on February 5 by gastroenterologist, candidate of medical sciences Andrei Kharitonov.
According to the expert, no evidence has yet been provided of the harm of products, including those with high acidity, which could significantly affect the health of the gastric mucosa. The exception, the doctor noted, is artificial chemical compounds: for example, vinegar essence.
“Today there is no evidence that any product (we do not use artificial chemical compounds such as vinegar essence or other solutions) is capable of injuring the gastric mucosa to such an extent that this becomes significant. You can drink coffee on an empty stomach if it does not cause unpleasant symptoms,” Kharitonov quotes “Gazeta.Ru”.
In addition, the interlocutor said that spicy food also cannot significantly harm the mucous membrane. On the contrary, the substance capsaicin, a substance contained in hot peppers, can improve the condition of the organ.
“In particular, it can activate microcirculation, which is necessary to protect the mucous membrane,” the expert concluded.
Last August, dietitian and nutritionist Evgeny Arzamastsev advised not to eat spices on an empty stomach, in particular dried meat with an excess of hot seasonings, as this will negatively affect the gastric mucosa, irritating it.
In addition, it is undesirable to drink freshly squeezed juices and alcohol on an empty stomach, as this can cause problems with the gastric mucosa and subsequently lead to gastritis.
