Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio in Mozambique
Gas, Di Maio, agreement on energy also with Mozambique
“Also in Mozambique we have reached an agreement to strengthen the energy partnership between our countries. The highest local authorities have confirmed their availability”. She announced it on Facebook the Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maiovisiting the African country together with the CEO Di Eni, Claudio Descalzi. “As already done with Algeria, Qatar, Congo and Angola, we continue to consolidate energy relations, in order to become independent from Russian gas and protect Italian families and companies”, reads the post of the owner of the Farnesina“It is only the latest move in the Italian plan to free itself from Russia.
CLO ‘, “MOZAMBIQUE GOOD TO REDUCE GAS DEPENDENCY BUT LOOK ALSO AT EASTMED”
The agreement in Mozambique to strengthen the energy partnership between Maputo and Italy “goes in the right direction”. The initiatives of recent days in Algeria and Qatar “are also commendable” even if they will have effects above all in the medium rather than in the short term. “In the Mediterranean, where it is estimated that about 3.5 trillion cubic meters of natural gas are stored underground, there would be a great opportunity in particular with the EastMed gas pipeline project which could be built in not too long. Certainly it would need to be first. resolve the diplomatic problems between Cyprus and Turkey but there is a great opportunity “.
This was stated by the director of the Adnkronos Energy magazine, Alberto Clò after today the Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio together with the CEO of Eni, Claudio Descalzi went to Mozambique. This is a mission that aims to reduce dependence on Russian gas that comes after those, with similar purposes, in Algeria, Qatar, Congo and Angola. For the former Minister of Industry, these initiatives go in the right direction to reduce Italy’s dependence on Russian gas in the medium term.
“As far as the short term is concerned, it is difficult to find sufficient quantities to completely replace the Russian gas, which in any case is continuing to arrive at the moment. Algeria and Qatar do not have a large capacity available in the short term. Also for Azerbaijan or Mozambique takes a little longer “, underlines Clò, suggesting the need to” exploit other options that can reduce dependence on Russian gas in a shorter time, such as Eastmed for example “. However, the economist denies that it is possible, as claimed by the EU Commission, to replace two thirds of Russian imports by the end of the year.
“We are unable to replace 2/3 of imports from Russia, which are equal to 100 billion cubic meters. It only creates illusions. We are unable to do without Russian gas in the short term”, says Clò . Also because, he notes, “many countries in the world at the moment are turning to Algeria, Egypt, Qatar … The risk, then, is that competition between European countries will be created with the result of increasing prices “.
