His Excellency Dr. Anwar bin Muhammad Gargash, the diplomatic advisor to His Highness the President of the State, affirmed that the stability of Iraq enhances the security of the region, pointing to the aspiration for a stable and prosperous Iraq capable of addressing its internal issues through dialogue and consensus. His Excellency Dr. Anwar Gargash said in a tweet on his official account on Twitter: « The stability of Iraq is stability for the region and the enhancement of its security, and as it is a priority for the Iraqi citizen, it is of Arab and regional interest. From this point of view, we look forward to a stable and prosperous Iraq capable of addressing its internal issues through dialogue and consensus to regain its pioneering and vital role at the Arab and regional levels. The Sadrist Movement” tents and prepared to enter an open sit-in in Parliament, while the leader of the current Muqtada al-Sadr called for changing the political system and the constitution, while the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, put forward an initiative to hold a political dialogue between the Iraqi parties hosted by Erbil.
Yesterday, the leader of the “Sadr movement” Muqtada al-Sadr described what is happening in the country as “the opportunity to change the political system and the constitution.”
Al-Sadr said, in a tweet on his Twitter account: “The spontaneous, peaceful revolution that liberated the Green Zone as a first stage is the golden opportunity for all of the people stung by the fire of injustice, terrorism, corruption, occupation and dependency.”
He added: “I hope that the tragedy of missing the first golden opportunity in 2016 will not be repeated. Yes, this is a great opportunity to fundamentally change the political system and the constitution, and the elections, which if rigged in favor of the deep state, will become the best free and fair elections. And malicious claims on the other hand.”
And he continued: “Oh, the Iraqi people, you are all responsible and you are all at stake, either an Iraq that is lofty among nations or a vassal Iraq controlled by the corrupt, the vassals and those with worldly ambitions, and even moved by the hands of the outside, east and west.”
He continued, “I call on everyone to support the revolutionaries for reform, including our proud clans and our security forces, who refuse to submit and submit to all classes of the people.”
In turn, a member of al-Sadr’s political team said yesterday that the sit-in is open until their many demands are met.
He continued, “The Sadrist movement demands the dissolution of parliament, the holding of new elections and the replacement of federal judges.”
Yesterday, supporters of the “Sadrist movement” stormed the parliament headquarters for the second time in less than a week, rejecting the nomination of the “coordinating framework” Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani for the position of prime minister, while differences continue between the political forces that prevent the formation of a new government since the last elections in October 10, 2021.
Yesterday, the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, put forward an initiative to hold a political dialogue between the Iraqi parties, hosted by Erbil. Barzani said in a statement: “The Kurdistan region will always be part of the solution, so we call on the concerned political parties in Iraq to come to Erbil and start an open and inclusive dialogue to reach an understanding and agreement based on the country’s higher interests.”
He added: “We are following with deep concern the political situation and developments in Iraq, and we call on the various political parties to exercise utmost restraint and engage in direct dialogue in order to solve the problems.”
He added, “Increasing the complexity of matters under these sensitive circumstances endangers societal peace, security and stability in the country.” And Barzani added: “While we respect the will of the peaceful demonstration of the masses, we stress the importance of protecting state institutions and the security, life and property of citizens and state employees.”
Alaa Al-Khatib, a political analyst and editor-in-chief of Al-Mustaklal newspaper in London, considered that the situation in Iraq is murky and may be heading for an escalation, noting that Al-Sadr chose confrontation when he called for an open sit-in.
In statements to Al-Ittihad, Al-Khatib stressed that Iraqi Parliament Speaker Muhammad Al-Halbousi’s call for suspending parliament sessions is “rational” for dialogue and a way out of the impasse that threatens Iraq.
He added: “There is no election for the prime minister or the election of the president of the country in this atmosphere, and if things get more complicated, perhaps a state of emergency will be declared in the country, and this will make the confrontation open with the presence of unarmed weapons.”
In turn, the legal expert Ali Jaber Al-Tamimi said that Article 64 of the Iraqi constitution stipulates that the House of Representatives is dissolved by an absolute majority of its members, i.e. half of the total number plus one, and this is done in two ways, either at the request of a third of the members or at the request of the Prime Minister and with the approval of the President of the Republic.
And he indicated that “the House of Representatives, when voting to dissolve itself by an absolute majority of its members, the President of the Republic calls for general elections in the country within a maximum period of 60 days from the date of the dissolution, and therefore the Council of Ministers continues to conduct daily affairs until the formation of the new government.”
