As you probably know, the much talked about has recently ended The Game Awards and, in addition to the related announcements, the focus of the evening was the awarding of prizes for this year’s best titles. The most coveted statuette is certainly that of GOTY (Game Of The Year), and as usual, we at Game Legends are also consulting to decide the editorial prizes to be awarded to the various games. However, in addition to this, it seemed right to give space to the heart of each of us, so as to reward, at least for what it’s worth, one’s Game Of The Year free from any critical cage. So, in addition to the normal awards that you find at the bottom, we open this special with the preferences of each of us.
The GOTY by Simone Lelli – Resident Evil Village
Inside the new chapter of the series All the experience gained over the years by the brand has been included, both in terms of strengths and weaknesses. It is a chapter capable of laying new foundations, proposing a gameplay close to both the seventh episode but also able to pay homage to the fourth and the first, all respecting the lore and the path followed from its beginning up to today. Resident Evil is a brand that is now making a comeback, either for the slightly subdued film, or for the future TV series more like a teen drama than a horror, yet the video game at least manages to maintain its standard, bring us a Chris Redfield constantly evolving and preparing for a ninth chapter that we can’t wait to try.
Il GOTY by Gianluigi Crescenzi – It Takes Two
The game EA Originals is undoubtedly one of the most welcome surprises of the current videogame generation, one of those pearls that you cannot forget. In a historical moment in which we sometimes forget that the purpose of video games is to amuse and entertain, It Takes Two is a bolt from the blue who managed to combine everything we needed in 2021 in a single product: a simple, immediate, direct and above all pleasant plot, a varied gameplay that alternates from time to time different subgenres, a breathtaking artistic direction, and a very important basic moral, which is impossible not to touch people’s hearts. As I already had the opportunity to explain extensively in a special, it was the right game, just when we needed it … and to be played with someone! Exaggeratedly pleasant.
Il GOTY by Tiziano Sbrozzi – FIST Forged In Shadow Torch
The game is a Metroidvania with a strong use of the “environmental” component: the interactions of the protagonist Rayton with the environment that surrounds it (the entire town of Torch City) makes each new area unique and amazing. At the narrative level, FIST profoundly describes complex human dramas such as betrayal by a friend, defeat on the battlefield, and rebirth after all. Rayton faces shadows of the present and the past, all intersected by betrayals, new companions and a strong oriental philosophy. The game, pad in hand, is then a real show, as complex as it is fun, also because mastering the FIST, or the mechanical punch that Rayton has on his shoulders, is not a feat to be taken lightly!
The GOTY by Andrea Pellicane – Returnal
Returnal manages to lead onto the pitch PlayStation 5’s best next-gen features, with a solid technical sector and details ready to surprise the player, which surround an intriguing narrative to say the least. With a fairly high difficulty, the game keeps users glued to the screen through countless action phases that require maximum concentration.
Il GOTY by Luca Di Carlo – It Takes Two
Genius and originality are the pillars of It Takes Two, a work that starting from a very simple idea has managed to realize a playful experience of rare beauty and able to surprise at every corner, thanks also to a well-chosen art design capable to give magnificent scenery. The creature by Hazelight Studios has character to spare and represents the clearest demonstration that you don’t need to have high-sounding budgets to create an unmissable work. Undoubtedly the best surprise of 2021.
The GOTY by Patrizio Coccia – Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Here the heart speaks only, but the new Ratchet and Clank made me feel a bit like when I was little, and after all these years it was like finding an old friend. Probably the Insomniac Games title is the most “next-gen” thing we’ve seen this yeardespite some title limitations. Aside from the flaws, Rift Apart is the game I’ve spent the most hours on over the course of this year, a particular one that I definitely can’t turn a blind eye to. Net of fierce competition, I have no doubts about what my very personal GOTY could be.
The GOTY by Samuel Raciti – 12 Minutes
Time loops are golden cages of infinite charm. Science fiction phenomena that bring players into terrible and ineluctable sequences of events that keep them imprisoned in an inextricable hell, yet at the same time damn interesting. 12 Minutes is the game that struck me most and bewitched me in this troubled 2021. The production that in my opinion, despite its very short duration and very intricate history, deserves the title of best game of the year, and among the best on the independent market.
Il GOTY by Alessio Cialli – Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Because? I do not know why! In a troubled year like this 2021 where the exploit of the new generation has not yet made itself felt, given the low supply compared to the demand, we have experienced moments of joy and terrible moments of pain. In all this, the star that most convinced me is certainly the indomitable duo who for years has been the symbol of things done well, which despite the age it always manages to give us strong emotions and a sparkling gameplay full of novelties. And it is precisely for this reason that I think it is right to highlight a title that was first able to highlight the power of the new Sony console and at the same time have given us a bit of nostalgia for past adventures.
Now that we have vented a bit, however, the time has come to get serious: so here are our votes!
