Practically one in four young Catalans (22.7%) occupies a lloc de feina for which they are overqualified. Així ho indicates a study of the Consell de Treball, Econòmic i Social de Catalunya (CTESC), which points out that it is showing a decrease over a decade (alshores stood at 30.7%). The organization assures that underemployment has “important consequences” in the living conditions of young people And, among others, it “decreases and impairs” emancipation, encourages emigration and impairs emotional well-being.
The report presented by these figures also points out that 7.1% of those under 34 years of age work less than the hours they return, a percentage that increases compared to 2012 (5.3%). L’estudi s’ha fet in collaboration with the National Youth Council of Catalonia (CNJC) also points out that overqualification is “significantly” reduced between 29 and 34 years. The report estimates that this phenomenon meant earning around 300 euros per month of the ones they played.
In detail, the fet of having an academic education higher than that required by the job requirement is more prevalent among young people born abroad (33.8%) and in the municipalities of menys with 10,000 inhabitants (25.5%). By sectors, objective overqualification is higher in construction (38.6%), industry (28.5%) and some service areas, such as commerce and hospitality (36.8%). It is also higher in temporary contracts (27%) and part-time jobs, from weekends to 20 hours a week (44.2%).
Regarding underemployment, the CTESC provides various measures and recommendations. On the one hand, it proposes to establish “incentives” and “resources” to offer both men and women underemployment and promote the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, together with the industrial sector. It also bets on scholarships and tax reductions and that measures s’orientin cap to the gifts and the most vulnerable col·lectius.
Regarding working for less than 30 hours, the report specifies that this work is also “practically” reduced at the moment of 30 years. The insufficiency of the day has a higher impact among workers and in this case it ends up at 8.9% of the total.
