The concept of success is absolutely relative, as we well know, and now it also proves it Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. George Miller’s new film indeed achieved first place in the US at the box office over the weekend, but it is still the biggest failure of the last 30 years.
Precisely, this is a failure compared to all Memorial Day weekends of the last 30 years. Memorial Day is the day on which the USA commemorates the American soldiers who died in war.
How much Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga spawned
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, according to data reported by Comscore, generated $32 million over the four-day holiday on Memorial Day. Looking at all earnings through Sunday, May 26, Furiosa has generated a total of $65.3 million. With $161 million in production costs, it will still take a while for expenses to come back.
Miller’s film beat the animated Garfield film, but it’s not actually a huge success compared to the year-over-year period. In fact, if we exclude the Covid-19 period when cinemas were closed, we have to go back to 1994 to find a film that generated less than Furiosa during the Memorial Day period. Let’s talk about Casper and his 22 million dollars.
By doing a comparison with Mad Max Fury Road – which however was not released in the same period -, the previous film had generated 45.4 million in its opening weekend.
Obviously Furiosa A Mad Max Saga still has time to recover. If you haven’t seen it yet and you have to decide whether to go to the cinema, find out more with our review.
