The department emphasized that as a result of the riots, none of the employees of the institution and those serving sentences were injured. They also noted that a commission of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, headed by Deputy Director of the Federal Penitentiary Service, Rustam Stepanenko, flew to North Ossetia, which should find out all the circumstances and reasons for what happened.
At present, employees of the local administration of the Federal Penitentiary Service and the prosecutor’s office, as well as investigators, are already working on the territory of the colony. “The damage assessment is being carried out,” the department said.
Earlier it was reported that investigators began checking the fact of the riots in IK No. 1.
The riots in the Vladikavkaz colony began on the evening of October 15 after scheduled searches were carried out there. According to the Federal Penitentiary Service, two prisoners refused to obey the demands of the employees of the institution and called on the others to start a riot. As a result, a conflict broke out between the employees of the colony and the prisoners, in which 200 to 600 prisoners took part. To suppress the riot, the forces of the National Guard and the OMON were pulled up to the building, the riots were stopped by 22:00.
At the same time, relatives of the inmates stated that the reason for the riot was assault by the colony staff. According to them, the beginning of the unrest was also facilitated by the tightening of the regime in the institution and the ban on communication of those serving sentences with relatives.
