What do owners take into account when naming their faithful friend? That is the question that Rover asks itself when presenting the list of the most popular pet names in 2024. For this reason, this year they have gone a step further with a study that reveals that for more than 64 percent of those surveyed, knowing your pet first is key. Of these, 26 percent need to previously analyze their personality and 37 percent their physical appearance.
In general, there is a preference for names that are short and easy to pronounce by 80 percent. But There are also those who are inspired by movies and series (26%), in historical or current figures (none of them politicians) (13%) although there are also many who choose the name because they find it funny (30%) like Sopa, the name of the singer Aitana’s dog.
A curious fact is also those who are inspired by people around them (9%), as well as by human names that attract them (8%) or, as we said before, by food (2%). In this last section to the already mentioned, soup, there is tomato, onion, leg and this 2024 there is a dog called Gamba.
Artificial intelligence to name your dog
When making the final decision with or without help, 56% of those surveyed acknowledge that they resorted to an external opinion, while 44% chose to decide for themselves. Of those who asked for advice, 27% consulted their partner, 22% relied on the opinion of their family and 6.5% sought guidance online.
Another interesting aspect of this study is the use of artificial intelligence. Despite its growing presence in various fields, at the moment it has not broken into the world of canine names in a prominent way, and everything seems to indicate that it will not do so in the short term. According to the data, only 4% of people has resorted to AI to decide what to name their pet, while 96% have not seen it necessary.

Taylor and musical twerking
One of the most talked about musical phenomena this year could not be missing among the trending names on the list. As Taylor Swift filled stadiums around the world with her latest tour The Eras Tour, her name has inspired many pet owners, making Taylor (+373%) the preferred choice among those who have set their sights on the stages to name your dogs. The list is completed by Red (+189%), Cheese (+39%) and Croquette (+36%). As we said in this edition, Gamba joins the banquet.
Our princess enters the list
Finally, this year, another new addition to the list of canine names is Leonor. A name that, without a doubt, resonates with the Spanish, because that is the name of the Princess of Asturias who this year came of age and has more and more weight in the Royal Family. Perhaps it is because of its elegance, or because of the affection it arouses, but the truth is that many families feel that their dogs deserve to have a name that elevates them to the status of little “princesses.”
