The Friends of Monkole Foundation has launched a project to empower and professionally train vulnerable women in the municipalities of Mont-Ngafula and Selembao, in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo). The project is designed primarily to benefit young women, particularly those who are vulnerable between the ages of 16 and 22.
This foundation has reached a collaboration agreement with ISEM Fashion Business School (University of Navarra) by which this school will help in disseminating the project through its communication channels, will host several awareness sessions that Friends of Monkole will give to the students, and will offer advice on all the needs that this project has from a training point of view.
Sewing workshops
This project will offer opportunities for non-formal basic education and training in technical skills and entrepreneurship. Sewing training, personal and group support will be provided, and sewing machines will be provided to establish sewing workshops.
“This project seeks not only the individual development of the beneficiaries, but also the economic and social empowerment of the communities,” explains Jorge Jiménez, Project Director of Friends of Monkole.
«The situation of girls in these municipalities is alarming, since they must overcome significant barriers to access quality education and job opportunities. “The majority come from vulnerable homes, where they are more likely to drop out of school or take on domestic responsibilities,” he adds.
No secondary education
According to recent data, more than 60% of girls in Mont-Ngafula and Selembao do not complete secondary education, limiting their employment opportunities and perpetuating a cycle of poverty.
The project has a focus on social and economic sustainability, addressing not only the girls’ immediate needs, but also creating a long-term impact on their communities.
