The frost will intensify this week. In Lapland, there are nights of up to 30 degrees below zero.
Frostbite will return as far as the southern parts of the country, when the high pressure over Finland will strengthen in the beginning of the week.
Especially in the southwestern part of the country, where we have been getting used to the mild weather in recent days, the bite of frost may feel particularly unpleasant.
In terms of winds, the weather is expected to be fairly calm. It was different last week, when the Finns were tormented by an arctic blast and icy wind.
As for the snowfall, there is only “a little flurry”, says the meteorologist on duty at the Finnish Meteorological Institute Tuomo Bergman.
Yet on Monday, the frost readings will be moderate in a large part of the country. Foreca predicts 0–8 degrees in the southern and central parts of the country and mostly 5–15 degrees in the north. During the day, the scattered snowfall area will gradually move towards the south.
In Lapland, the night before Tuesday may break the 20-degree night frost mark. Cold air from the north slowly pushes towards the south.
According to the forecasts, the weather on Tuesday will be mostly cloudy. Foreca predicts 5–18 degrees below zero in the southern and central parts of the country, and 15–25 degrees below zero in the northern parts.
The cooling will continue on Wednesday and Thursday.
“It remains to be seen whether Thursday or Friday will be the coldest day of the week. It may be that at that time the 30-degree night frost line will break in the north,” says Bergman.
However, in southern Finland, due to the influence of the sun, the days start to be up to ten degrees warmer than the nights. In Lapland, the variation is around five degrees.
It's 10–20 degrees below freezing during the day in the southern and central part of the country, mainly on the west coast it's a little milder in places. In the north it is 15–25 degrees below zero, in Lapland it is even over 30 degrees in some places.
The coldest night in Uusimaa is probably the night before Friday, when 25 degrees below zero is predicted.
The weekend According to Bergman, the weather is still difficult to predict at this point. With these prospects, it seems that severe frosts may continue in Lapland.
In the rest of the country, the temperature will drop slightly. However, the wintry, mild weather continues.
“Some have already had time to get excited about spring, but it is true that the end of winter is not in sight.”
