On May 17, the Vatican revised its protocols on supernatural events, like the supposed virgins who cry and the crucifixes that bleed, revealing if they really exist or if they are frauds.
The new document issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith has modified the rules on how to address alleged supernatural phenomena or apparitions in a diocese.
One of the most notable decisions is the transfer of the power to recognize the “supernatural” nature of these events from the bishops to the Pope and Vatican headquarters. That is, only the Dad and the Vatican will be able to determine if they are true or false.
It is important to note that the Pope Francisco has expressed his skepticism towards such phenomena, stating last year in a television interview with Italian RAI that the apparitions of the Virgin Mary “are not always real” and that, in his opinion, the Virgin prefers to direct attention towards Jesus instead of herself.
It should be noted that the stories of the faithful about events such as the “stigmata”, represented by the wounds of the crucifixion of Jesus on the hands and feet of people considered holy, have given rise to the creation of sanctuaries and pilgrimages on numerous occasions.
However, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, has pointed out the need to approach these events with caution, warning about the risk of fraud and exploitation for economic reasons, power, fame or recognition. social.
The new document establishes that the Church will not issue statements about the authenticity of these supernatural events. Instead, she may issue a “nulla osta.”
This is a statement that indicates that there are no doctrinal impediments in the message transmitted by the protagonist of the alleged supernatural phenomenon, whether apparitions of the Virgin, Jesus or saints, and no evidence of deception or fraud to date.
To reach this conclusion, more specific norms have been established on the powers of diocesan bishops, episcopal conferences and the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
The formation of diocesan commissions will be required that include at least one theologian, a canonist and an expert in the phenomenon in question, in charge of investigating alleged supernatural events.
The objective of these changes is to streamline investigation processes, given the rapid dissemination of news through the Internet and social networks today.
Furthermore, it seeks to avoid the overvaluation of these events in comparison with the fundamental message of the Gospel and to prevent contradictions, as has happened in previous cases where events initially declared miraculous were later denied.
