France: Only days left for Iran’s nuclear decision

Le Drian told the French Senate that “the more we advance, the more Iran accelerates its nuclear measures, and the less interest the parties have in joining the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (2015 agreement), from here, we have reached the turning point today,” stressing that “it is not a question. Weeks, but a matter of days.

In addition, Iran announced that it wants a “political declaration” from the US Congress in which the United States pledges to return to the nuclear agreement and implement it.

During the Vienna talks aimed at salvaging the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran demanded firm guarantees that a future US administration would not withdraw from a potential agreement, as happened in 2018.

“Public opinion in Iran cannot accept the statement of a head of state as a guarantee, especially from the president of the United States, which withdrew from the nuclear agreement” in 2018, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said in an interview with the Financial Times.

The agreement concluded in 2015 between Tehran and major powers included easing sanctions on Tehran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program, but the United States unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018 under President Donald Trump, and re-imposed economic sanctions, which prompted Iran to retreat from its commitments.

Iran and the signatories to the 2015 agreement (France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China) are holding talks to revive it, while Washington is indirectly participating in the talks.
