Climb to the Cruz de Miravete de Beniaján and Torreagüera; tour the orchard between El Esparragal and Cantera de La Cueva; a walk through the orchard and the speck of the La Raya river and take a river route through the city. All these routes are prepared to walk the 10,000 daily steps recommended by the World Health Organization and especially indicated, but not only, so that they can be done by schoolchildren in the municipality.
Creating healthy lifestyle habits among the little ones so that they maintain them in the future is the ultimate goal, said the mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, during the presentation on Monday morning of the initiative, promoted by the Escuelas Activas association. of the Region of Murcia.
“Finally, the municipality of Murcia joins these proposals,” he said, noting that others are already being prepared. They will be proposals from the schools of the municipality. “We must get children to leave mobile phones and game consoles,” he said.
Data to take into account, exposed the councilors of Sustainable Mobility and Health, Carmen Fructuoso and Esther Nevado, is that in the Region 25% of schoolchildren and adolescents are overweight.
The routes are programmed for Infant and Primary students, and in the next few days an ‘app’ will allow minors to play while they go through them, an application that also proposes challenges. The itineraries, all circular, can be completed in an hour and a half and range between 5 and 6 kilometres.
Juan Alcaraz, coordinator of the Active Schools program, explained that behind this project there are more than 300 teachers from the Region. “We are firmly committed to improving the health of our students,” he stressed, indicating that the routes are adapted to schoolchildren, but he also encouraged adults and families to do them.
These first four signposted itineraries are in the surroundings of the public schools Ciudad de Murcia, Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles de El Esparragal, Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de La Raya and El Bojal de Beniaján.

The first of the routes, El Esparragal and La Cueva, is circular and starts from the cultural center of El Esparragal, reaches the Nuestra Señora del Rosario hermitage and returns to the starting point. It has a low level of difficulty, the estimated time to cover the 5.6 kilometers is 68 minutes and it reaches 7,000 steps.
The second of these routes is that of the CEIP Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, in the district of La Raya. It is of low difficulty and reaches 8,923 steps. The distance covered by this route is 5.8 kilometers and the estimated time is one hour and ten minutes.
The third proposed itinerary runs through the center of Murcia, reaches 10,000 steps and its seven kilometers can be covered in one hour. The level of difficulty of this route, which runs along the banks of the Segura River, starting from Álamos Street, next to Plaza de la Paja, reaches the Artillery Barracks, and returns to the Puente de Los Peligros.
The fourth route, the one that goes up to the Miravete cross, is of medium difficulty and covers a total of six kilometers and 10,000 steps. The itinerary begins at the Hermitage of El Bojal and reaches the aforementioned point on Mount Torreagüera. The route follows trails and from the top you can enjoy the view of the municipality of Murcia and the Sierra de Carrascoy.
