Live services still dominate the ranking of most played titlesas demonstrated by the top 10 drawn up by Newzoo for the month of January 2024, which takes into consideration the number of players between the USA and the UK and once again crowns Fortnite.
- Fortnite
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 / Warzone 2.0
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Roblox
- Minecraft
- Rocket League
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege
- Palworld
- Apex Legends
- Overwatch 1 and 2
In short, despite the terrible reputation of this type of production, it is clear why Sony is investing in live services, even at the cost of put more traditional projects on the back burner.
“Newzoo's ranking of monthly users as of January 2024 highlights the live services challenge facing the gaming industry,” wrote Christopher Dring, “Aside from Palworld, it's basically always the same ten games. They're so ingrained.”
“Convincing people to stop playing online games with their friends, abandoning or at least temporarily interrupting that progression to devote yourself to something else and continuing to play it at this point seems really, really difficult.”
The game is worth the candle?
The top 10 above confirms that when a live service works, it really works and has literally entertained a wide audience for years thanks to post-launch support that continues to introduce content and improvements.
Certain, the point is to hit the nail on the head and this is where the proverbial donkey falls, as demonstrated by some recent experiments (see Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Skull and Bones, but also Foamstars and Helldivers 2) which have yet to demonstrate whether they will be able to establish themselves in such a competitive sector.
